Our Story

Da Beach House Maui is a locally owned surf company on the island of Maui. Maui McMillin started the business in January 2003. He created a surf shop that was a combination of everything you would need to be outfitted for the beach and surfing and furnishings and items that would compliment the beach house lifestyle. When customers visit our stores, they feel like they are part of our “ohana” (Hawaiian word for family).

Maui grew up surfing in Maui, graduated from the University of Hawaii with a degree in Psychology, and then moved to California for about 10 years. He returned to Maui in 1999 and worked at the Fairmont Kea Lani and taught surfing on the side. On January 8, 2003, Maui opened a small surf shop called Da Beach House Maui.At the end of 2003, Maui met Annie Lai while she was on her vacation surfing at Puamana beach park.  Nine days later he asked her to marry him and two months later, Annie left her job as a Director of Admissions of the business school at UC Berkeley. It must have been the warm ocean and Maui’s collection of 100 surfboards that sealed the decision. So she packed up her 2 surfboards and 5 duffle bags and joined Maui on Maui. To top off the moment they were married at a historical property on the ocean with surfboards tied to the trees.

With Annie’s extensive background in shopping (thanks to her parents), she started designing clothing for women and children.She started the Maui Lai label, which is based on her main philosophy for her favorite clothes:

2. A perfect fit for comfort so you will want to wear it every day
3. Washable…no more dry cleaning!
